First Friday
Galesburg’s First Friday is a celebration of historic Seminary Street, where locals and visitors can enjoy live music, shopping, and sampling local cuisine and adult beverages. The event is free and open to the public. It is also family friendly. The first Friday of June, July, and August features several events.
During the First Friday celebration, the first block of Seminary Street is closed to traffic. Merchants open their doors to provide food and drinks and entertainment. Music is provided by Jera and the Absoluts, central Illinois’ premier party band, playing favorites from rock to blues. Children’s activities are also offered by the Discovery Depot. G&M Distributors is the beer and alcohol sponsor and will be offering free samples to those 21 and over. The Tompkins State Bank will be the host of the next First Friday in Galesburg in 2022.
Lake Storey
The city of Galesburg has budgeted $50,000 for an expansion of Lake Storey in order to bring motor boats and more recreational activities to the area. The plan is to make Lake Storey a popular summer getaway destination. It is also hoping to add restaurants and hotels to the area.
The city has 23 city parks and a public beach. It also has miles of wooded trails. During the summer, the parks are bustling with activity. There are five playgrounds for children and a water park. Visitors will enjoy the lake’s sandy shores and a wide range of other recreational activities.
Carl Sandburg State Historic Site
The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site is the boyhood home and birthplace of author Carl Sandburg. It is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The historic site is located in Galesburg, Illinois. It contains exhibits and artifacts relating to the author’s life.
The main building of the site is a two-story Greek Revival frame house that was built in 1858. Today, it serves as the site’s visitor center. This building includes a small museum shop and office, and public restrooms. The visitor center also features a small exhibit gallery. Visitors can also take guided tours of the cottage, as well as the garden behind it.
At the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site, visitors can see the childhood home of Carl Sandburg, who would go on to become a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Lincoln biographer. His childhood home still bears many relics of his home life. There is also a museum dedicated to Sandburg, which is located next to his gravesite and memorial garden. Visitors can also enjoy a 20-minute video presentation at the site. In addition, during the summer, the site hosts a concert series.
The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site Association has organized several community events and programs related to the author. In 2017, the Association sponsored a play in Knox County schools based on Sandburg’s “Rootabaga Stories”. Additionally, the Association has provided the Site with a new Visitors Center, and has provided financial support for a Driving Tour brochure. The Association has also purchased a low-wattage FM transmitter that broadcasts an acoustic description of the Carl Sandburg Site. This station can be heard on car radios and cell phones.
Restaurants
