HGTV’s PR nightmare

HGTV’s messiest house episode may have been its worst PR nightmare yet, but it’s still one of the network’s most successful shows. Its popularity has skyrocketed, with a circulation of more than a million issues per year. HGTV HOME alone is expected to generate over $300 million in retail sales in 2015. The network has recently expanded into Asia, including the Philippines and Singapore.

The network’s popularity has been fueled by buzzy marquee names, a burgeoning homegrown crop of hot hosts, and addictive and simple formats. Its latest ratings quarter made it the eighth-most-watched cable network, with 22 million viewers tuning in every week. Earlier this month, the network also announced that it will add ten new shows to its slate for the 2015 season, as well as airing new episodes of 20 other series. Overall, HGTV will air 800 hours of original programming this year, including more than a dozen new series.

Derek made his HGTV debut in summer 2021 on the second season of “Hot Mess House,” a show centered on home organization and decluttering. Host Cassandra Aarssen divides people into four organizing styles based on how they think about organization, and Derek is called in to help with special projects.
