Mental states such as Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD are rapidly on the rise. More and more people are seeking help and advice on how to deal with these conditions. The Public Health Agency of Canada states that:
- One in three Canadians will experience a mental illness or substance use disorder in their lifetime;
- More than 10 Canadians die by suicide each day;
- Suicide rates among Indigenous youth are among the highest in the world;
- Only 57% of Canadian adults and 43% of Canadian youth report a high capacity to cope with unexpected and difficult problems and day-to-day demands; and
Hardship, trauma, family violence and stigma have been linked to an increased risk of suicide, substance use and mental illness.
Truth is, everyone will experience some level of depression or anxiety in their lifetime, and for some it can be extreme. There are many factors that can play into this state of mind that have to do with both external and internal influences.
I have experienced severe depression/anxiety in my past. I started off by listening to my physician and going on prescription SSRI drugs in my teens. This had a horrible effect on me and made the situation bearable much worse for me overall. I desperately wanted to claim my mind back from the feelings of worry, doubt, fear, and mental stress that was consuming me and taking over my life.
I was eventually able to come out of it and drastically change my outlook on life, and on myself through a change in diet, through study and research, and by seeking council.
By working with my body through Martial Art training and a proper health plan, and working with my mind though journaling, meditation, and reading, I was able to make small steps towards regaining my sanity and overall state of inner peace.
